iBIO Legislative Update - GMO Labeling

Yesterday, I had the honor of being called a "bad man” "evil” and "a snake” by angry activists after giving testimony at an Illinois Senate Sub Committee hearing here in Chicago. I elicited these reactions because I opposed anti-GMO legislation which would require labeling in Illinois of GMO foods and foods with GMO ingredients.

The bill (SB 1666) is a foot in the door trying to get the General Assembly to pass a bill or resolution putting Illinois on record as against GMOs. This is kind of like putting Illinois on record against biotech drugs, or as against ethanol or bio-diesel.

Part of the glue that brings iBIO member companies together—whether from the agricultural, bio-industrial or health care spaces—is our insistence on science based regulation. If folks in one sphere can use hysteria, fear and lies to thwart good, wholesome products, it sets a terrible precedent for the same thing happening in another biotech sector.

So how can you help right now? Please read my testimony and get thoroughly informed on the subject, regardless of which bio sector you work in, and whether you work for a big company, small company, for a university or as member of one of our outstanding service provider firms.

That’s enough for now. But it’s a lot, because I genuinely believe the health and well-being of literally millions of people worldwide is going to ultimately depend on public acceptance of these healthy and nutritious foods.

With best regards,

David Miller
